Festivals: Traditional Ceremonies
Despite, or perhaps because of, its hard working exterior - with suited salary men, long commutes, and longer working hours - Japan is, not so far beneath the surface, a country of riotous festivals and celebrations.
Known as matsuri, these traditional festivals - often religious or seasonal in nature, and based on ancient customs or ceremonies - punctuate the year with fireworks displays, ample sake, dancing, and parades.
